In the end they turn these keys into money for some charity. The game was adapted in many countries, including US (but only a pilot), see Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Boyard_(TV_series) I think I've never seen anyone manage to get to the end of that series of cylinders... Another nice one is the female-only mud fight ;) M.
